The Pennsylvania National Guard Marathon Team had a strong showing at the Army 10-miler held in Washington, DC, 9 Oct 2011, with both the men's and women's teams placing first in their respective divisions (National Guard Men, National Guard Women). The PA men's team totaled 3:56:32 (sum of top 4 runners' times), beating runner-up Maryland National Guard by 22 minutes. The team was led by SSG Mark Jones in 57:35, followed by SSG Troy Harrison (58:02), SSG Matt Stern (59:26), SSG Dan Kysela (1:01:31) and LTC Mark Austin (1:01:46).
On the women's side, the PA team finished 27 minutes ahead of the second place National Guard team (NGB Women Warriors) with a time of 5:06:11. A1C Emily Shertzer led the PA team and was also the first military female across the line in 57:54. CPT Deborah Fisher finished second for the PA women in 1:16:04, followed closely by WO3 Mei Van Gentry in 1:16:43. Rounding out the PA team were WO1 Amanda Nesbitt (1:35:30), SGT Amy Miller (1:36:38), and SSG Kortney Powers (1:50:14).
